The actions suggested by her power changed from moment to moment, in a seemingly random pattern that Taylor couldn't pin down for certain. She had access to a couple of actions that her power told her would be effective at accomplishing a goal of some kind, mostly attacking and defending. In a fight, she had enhanced reflexes and the ability to plan out her moves. Using this pattern and the constant feeling at the back of her head, Taylor could determine a couple of things. This time she learned how to deal a heavy strike that would leave an enemy vulnerable and once again, she felt it settle in her mind. Once more, the feeling of accomplishment after surviving an ordeal came and with it, another choice. That feeling of learning something new wasn't coming back until one day she got into a physical altercation with Sophia again. In the days that followed Taylor read up on Parahumans, using every source that she could find in order to get ideas that would help develop her own powers. Taylor latched onto that hope like a lifeline. Could she become a hero? Could she join the Wards? Could she have the power to help herself even though it seemed like no one else would? Those thoughts were swirling in her head. At least, that was Taylor's first impression. Not only that, but she was a Thinker of some sort. Taylor wasn't stupid, nor was she slow on the uptake. Ways to strike, to defend and even to trip up an enemy to make them more vulnerable to strikes.Ĭurious, she picked the technique that would allow her to deflect an attack in but a moment, and she observed it settling in her mind, next to all those other ways she knew how to attack and defend. With a growing realization Taylor knew with certainty that those were techniques for combat. To pick one of three things or to refuse it entirely. What happened? What were those thoughts? Did she have powers? Was she crazy?Īs if to answer her questions something bloomed in her mind. With the bullies losing interest in her she rose from the floor and then the warped perspective she experienced faded away as if nothing happened. Thankfully, this time the bullying was short and without Emma, nothing Sophia said would really hurt her. The girls said nothing, laughing and jeering at her. She curled up in a way that would turn the kick into a glancing blow and surely enough, it came just as she predicted. Not only would that not work, it would also get her in trouble.Īs Taylor resigned herself to a course of action things became fluid once more. She wasn't going to fight back, of course. How did she know that? Taylor wasn't entirely sure, but she was absolutely certain that the other girl that stood next to Sophia was about to kick her while she was down. She could do a mix of them, but if she went on the offence she would have to sacrifice defense and inevitably get hit in return. She also became intimately aware that she didn't have enough time to do all of those things. Not only that, but she also saw a couple of ways in which she could strike at her attackers to do some damage. Taylor became aware of how to best protect herself in a couple of different ways, and even ways in which she could combine the methods for a more effective way to avoid damage by the girls. Then, it was as if the world slowed down. "Don't touch me, loser!" was the girl's parting shot. She barely had a moment to notice that the girl she bumped into was tall and muscular, before she was pushed back, tripping her onto the floor. "Watch where you're going Hebert!" Sophia said, mockingly as she shoulder checked her, making her stumble right onto another girl. It was Sophia, and some other girls, but Emma and Madison were strangely missing. So preoccupied was she with her thoughts that she didn't notice when she became surrounded. A beating of a gigantic heart and the song of a whale. Filled with evil and strange, twisted things. She vaguely remembered hallucinating about some dark place. She barely remembered anything from that time. She was cleared of anything truly damaging and seemed to be in perfect health only a couple of days after the locker to the complete astonishment of medical staff. It started as exhausting and only got worse from there. First few days after coming back to school felt like an endless spiral staircase for Taylor.
